Preparing the Spring Garden

seedlings

Last year we planted our first full garden. (We'd done mini-gardens and potted gardens before) and it was mostly a success. This year we (as in, Eric) are feeling more confident and decided to start it all from seeds. Most of the seeds are from the Seed Savers Exchange, which Eric really likes.

We have lots and lots of different tomatoes, green beans, watermelon, crookneck squash, zucchini, bell pepper, beets, orka, and more stuff that I'm sure I'm forgetting.

Will you be planting a garden this year? What are you growing? Any tips for starting from seed?

  1. I have no advice. I'm not a gardener, but I'm thinking (nervously) of planting a couple pots this year to start small and hopefully have some confidence building success myself!

  2. Ohh, I am curious about your little egg carton setup! (that's what the is right?) I've done a VERY few things from seeds, just flowers really. I need to create an area for veggies though! I attempted a tomato plant last year and it didn't do so good due to giant bugs attacking it! My basil plants have always done good though.

  3. how awesome! i wish i had a husband that was more on board, then maybe i would be more motivated to do it. :) i tried a very small garden once and failed. i dream about a big garden one day, but probably not this year. :)

  5. I can't wait to get my garden going! It's hard though because we can have hard freezes well into the Spring so I have to wait a bit. I have been thinking about doing more pots so that I can bring them in and get started earlier. The only thing I've had success with growing from seeds were snap peas. I got a bunch of them and they were really hearty (and cute climbing the trellis too!) Otherwise though, I'll be planting tomatoes, jalapenos, basil, rosemary, green and red bell peppers and probably more. I tried strawberries last year (in a topsy turvy-BIG fail) and they didn't grow so I want to try that again. Love, love, love having a garden!
