Girls' Trip

Today my mama, my girl, and I are going to the city. It will be nice to get away from the heat and hang out with my mom and Finley. I am so, so excited to visit the Renegade Craft Fair and maybe even meet Elsie and Emma (and other cool bloggers). Anyone else going to be there?

The little boys are VERY excited about a boys' weekend. I'm sure they'll have lots of fun while I'm gone. What are your weekend plans?

Sweet Samuel

sweet sammy

It's so interesting to me how two children (Judah and Samuel) can be 18 months apart, raised together almost exactly the same, and be so different. Clears up some of my questions regarding nurture vs nature.

My Sammy is strong, passionate, opinionated, and, sometimes, stubborn. (Like his Papa, because his Mama is never stubborn.)

He is affectionate and cuddly and loving. He gives lots of hugs and kisses and loves to sit in our laps and touch. With me, with Papa, with his siblings, with his grandmas.

I love my little guy.

(And, I'm still having lots of fun with my camera.)

Finley's Room

monster girl

Today, my girly girl is 7 months old. So, for her 7 months, I thought you might like a little peak into our work in progress.

fifi's room

Vintage thermos collection, vintage embroidery flower and owl, three little dresses: my old dress, from allthenumbers etsy shop, and the dress I made.

fifi's midcentury decor

Isn't that huge gold midcentury picture awesome? Spotted and bought by the midcentury/danish modern master/eric at a yard sale for $5. Vintage tray, paint by number, Black Apple doll, and a Finley chair from my aunt.

fifi's closet

A closet fit for a little lady.

Last Night's Dinner

apron

See this vintage apron? I got it at an estate sale on Saturday. I'm pretty sure that wearing an apron improves my cooking. A lot.

So, last night I put on my apron and got a wild hair up my bum (ok, I don't really say that, but I've read several different versions of this phrase and it REALLY cracks me up) to do some cooking.

mozarella sticks

I've been wanting to make the Pioneer Woman's mozzarella sticks for awhile and so we had them as an appetizer. They are delicious! Only Eric and I liked them, so we have lots left over. I could have eaten all of the leftovers for lunch today, but I restrained myself and ate a few with some chicken and fresh tomato slices.

chicken dinner

For dinner I tried to use up lots of produce from our garden and the Farmer's Market. Although we've gotten lots of meat from the Farmer's Market, this roasted chicken is an organic one from Costco. I stuffed it with a lemon and garlic and onion from the Farmer's Market. All of the herbs are from my garden.

The potatoes were, also, from the Farmer's Market and cooked with the leftover onions, garlic, and herbs.

Salad with more Farmer's Market veggies, of course, and Annie's Naturals dressing. Yum!

zucchini baby food

Finley enjoyed her dinner, too. I must say, I'm kind of proud of it. I made baby food for the all the boys, but this zucchini was grown, picked, steamed, and blended by me. And, she even likes it.

Around the Web

Here's a few things that I've enjoyed around the internet lately:

Story of my life.

Check out Alyssa's blog and watch this video of Joe's Place. Don't forget to get your kleenex first.

My favorite color right now is aqua, too. Constant inspiration from elsie.

The super cute newlywed blog, Our Marriage Project, especially a post on continuing to pursue after marriage.

"Don’t be a whiner, quitter, or baby and quit pouting or being surprised about “how hard” it is" on the Acts 29 Network blog.

"Will Having a Perfect Family Make You Happy?" on Preschoolers and Peace.

Have a great weekend! See you on Monday!

Quiet Day Home

silas

If you haven't already, I definitely recommend reading the comments on the cloth diaper posts (Part 1 here and 2 here) for a few more tips. And, if you have any, please leave them. I'm by no means an expert and would love to hear your tips and tricks!

We had plans today to go to them gym, then swimming in the creek with my dad. Unfortunately, Silas came down with a tummy bug last night.

It's so, so sad seeing my sweet guy sick. I think it's the first time he's been really sick, but thankfully, he's feeling better today. He's kept his water and milk down, but hasn't eaten much yet.

Eric is getting home a little early today, so I'm have a quick thrift store trip planned. I went to take my bike to get a tune up yesterday and, randomly, stopped in one for less than 10 minutes. In those few minutes I managed to find a super cute dress, a shelf for Finley's room, ceramic owl, and a pink flower/leaf tv tray (that I plan to use in Finley's room, too- can't wait to show off the finished product!). Imagine what I can find with 30 minutes to browse. Hopefully, some good stuff!

Cloth Diapers, Part 2

tinytush

You can read Cloth Diapers Part 1 here.

Wash and Care
When I tell people I cloth diaper most want to know if I use a diaper service.

Actually, I wouldn't recommend a diaper service. I have heard stories (at least at our local place) of diapers that weren't getting all the way clean. Your baby's diapers are being cleaned with lots of other baby's diapers and with their poop. Gross, right?

When I wash my own diapers I know they are getting completely clean.

I use Country Save detergent and then wash the diapers through three cycles:
1. A cold soak cycle. Water only, no detergent. It's ideal to soak them all night, so I'll start the load before I go to bed and leave the lid up. At the very minimum I soak for an hour.
2. A hot wash cycle on the longest time your machine uses. This is where I use the detergent. Use a little more than half a scoop.
3. A cold, short wash cycle. Water only. By the third cycle the diapers are clean, but this is to make sure all of the detergent is off. Detergent can build up and minimize absorbency.

In the summer I hang the diapers outside on a clothes rack. In the heat of the summer the diapers dry really fast (especially the pockets) and the sun also bleaches any stains.

When it's raining outside I put them in the dryer on low (you can do medium, too, but my dryer doesn't have that option) until they're fairly dry, then hang them up inside. Don't use dryer sheets, which can build up on the diaper and, also, prevent absorbency.

I don't use one of those sprayers that attaches to the toilet. They're not necessary and I definitely wouldn't want my kids getting ahold of a poop sprayer. (I have enough to worry about.) I, also, don't use the disposable liners. I have some and I have used them, but, again, they're just not necessary. Washing cloth diapers is not as disgusting or as complicated as one would think.

Cloth Wipes
You can use regular wipes with cloth diapers, but you might as well use cloth wipes. They're easier because you won't have to throw the wipes in the trash and the diaper in wet bag and you can buy them or make them yourself.

You can find cloth wipes in most places that sell cloth diapers (I got mine locally at Eco in Chico/Baby's Boutique) or make them yourself. I saw instruction for making them by cutting up an old receiving blanket and then serging or finishing the edges. This was in my pre-sewing days, so I just cut them up and that was that. They do shred a little in the wash, but it's not a big deal. These wipes from Goodmama are too cute. I think I just might need to buy them.

Wet Bags
A wet bag is a (usually) a zipper or velcro bag with a plastic liner for storing dirty diapers. At the minimum you need two large ones for home, two medium ones for your diaper bag, and one small one for cloth wipes. You need two, so while one is being washed the other one can be used.

There are lots of cute wet bags on etsy and tutorials to make your own online, but my favorite wet bags are from Goodmama.

Just to clarify, I use the small tiny wet bag for clean cloth wipes in my diaper bag. At home, I use a spray bottle with water and a few drops of tea tree oil to wet the wipes. When I go out I don't want to carry a spray bottle, so I get them wet ahead of time. Then, I put dirty wipes in the bigger wet bag with the dirty diapers.

If you are thinking of cloth diapering I definitely encourage you to go for it. There is a learning curve at first (like anything) but after a few washes it becomes second nature.

I'd love to answer any questions you have.

tootsies

My sister in law and mother in law gave Finley her first pedicure and it's pretty much the cutest thing I've ever seen.

And, that my friends, is another reason why I love having a little girl.

Sew Excited

princess

You might have noticed that I've been taking a little (unintentional) sewing and crafting break. The busyness of life have gotten in the way, but I'm excited to jump back into things. At least a little, as life doesn't look like it's slowing down anytime in the next 18+ years. Recently I did find some time to sew a few gifts for some cute kids.

e birdy shirt

I made this shirt and tutu for sweet Emma's second birthday. For the tutu I used this tutorial and this tutorial and modified them a little bit.

tutu

I am so, so excited to start the Home Ec sewing class in a few weeks. I've always wanted to do one of the Red Velvet Art girls' classes, but circumstances haven't made that possible. Fortunately, this one is at a perfect time and I can't wait to get my sew on!

All of the projects look like so much fun, but I'm most excited to learn how to sew commercial patterns. I really want to make pretty dresses for Finley and I. And, of course, some boys things for my favorite little guys.

Anyone want to join me?

Twins

In the past week, when we haven't been hanging out with the in laws....

scott, fifi, & eric

(Another picture from my sis in law. Can you tell which one is Eric?)

I've been cleaning and organizing like crazy. I've been selling so much stuff on Craigslist that it feels like I'm running my own business. I love having people come to my house, pick up my junk, and hand me a wad of cash.

My Coupons

I'm not a big coupon girl. I know a lot of you are so good at clipping coupons, printing them out, and saving millions of dollars every time you go to the store.

BUT, I do always make a google search for a coupon code when doing online shopping. I love saving money and My Coupons makes coupons easy to find all in one place.

The back to school section in perfect for mamas sending their kids off to school or homeschooling mamas like me. One of my favorite coupons is 20% off any item at Borders. The most difficult part would be choosing one book. (Have any recommendations?)

A few of my other favorite coupons are 15% + free shipping at Old Navy on any purchase over $50, free shipping and 5% off all orders at Overstock (I just bought a new area rug from Overstock!), and, of course, all of the Target coupons- my favorite place to shop online. I will be putting those to good use!

I appreciate any site that helps me save money. I would love to see more of my favorite specialized stores on there (like Anthro), but honestly, they have pretty much all of my online shopping favorites. I've been checking out their sites for the past few weeks and have barely scratched the surface. There are so many coupons!

If you end up using a coupon let me know which one. And, what you bought! :)

You can, also, check out My Coupons on Twitter and Facebook.

This is a compensated Mama Buzz review for My Coupons.

Summer FUN!

My brother in law and his family are in town for about two weeks and both of my sisters in law and their husbands were here for the weekend. So, we've been having lots of fun with the in laws.

judah & luke

Judah and Luke, Scott and Caroline's son, playing in the water in Eric's parents' backyard.

Judah, also, started Vacation Bible School this week, so we're busy busy busy.

AND, it's supposed to get up to 106 this week. I see a lot of swimming in our future.

Same ingredients, two ways

Here's two of my easy, use up the humongous Costco vats, and the beginnings from our garden meals.

These started out the same- saute zucchini, sundried tomatoes, artichoke hearts, spinach, and a little garlic in olive oil.

noodles

Then add the (pre-cooked) noodles and heat together

egg scramble

For this meal mix two eggs, a little milk, and a little shredded cheddar cheese in a bowl. Add the egg mixture in the pan after the veggies are cooked, and stir until the eggs are fully cooked. I served it over a piece of whole wheat toast. (Remember, yummy isn't always pretty.)

My New Friend

On Friday morning I checked my phone and there was text from Eric saying, "Look in the black Chico bag. There's a surprise for you."

I opened it up and there was a Canon Rebel! I'm a happy girl. Just like this happy girl.

happy girly

Stay tuned for many, many more pictures while I figure this thing out.

PS Any tips?

Old Friends/Best Friends

friends

Last night I hung out with two of my high school bffs and bridesmaids, Tara and Cari.

The best kind of friendships are the ones where you can go months or even years without hanging out and then pick up right where you left off. It's been a long time since the three of us hung out together, but it didn't feel like anytime at all.

I'm so glad that Cari lives here again and hoping one day Tara and her husband will, too, so our girls' nights can become a regular thing.

Today is Cari's 28th Birthday! Happy Birthday, Care! I pray that this year you draw closer to Jesus and whatever your circumstances are- in blessing and in challenges- that you would know Him and have revelation of His love like never before. I love you!

*Please excuse the blurry, not-so-great picture. Eric took it with kids on his lap. Thank goodness my photos are about to get a whole lot better. More on that tomorrow...
