Did you ever have a penpal? I remember as a kid getting one from Brio Magazine (did anyone else subscribe to Brio?). Then, in junior high one of my good friends moved across the country and we wrote back and forth pretty regularly for a few years. I loved getting letters from her.
Recently I participated in a craft swap on skunkboy's blog (more on that later) and saw how excited Judah was about sending the package out. The only mail Judah and Samuel get is their High Five magazine (which they love!), but they ask everyday when the mail comes, "is there something for me?"
I know they would love to get a letter or postcard from someone in another part of the country. Is anyone else interested in doing a mail swap with their kiddo(s)? (And, if you're a homeschooling mom like me this totally counts as geography, right?)

you have a Nexus One ad on your blog there. you must be pulling down major bank now. woo hoo!
ReplyDeleteyou know it
ReplyDeleteCaden has been pretty into mail lately. We oftentimes write to my parents, and Pete's parents, grandparents, etc and have them write back. I don't think it matters where the letter is coming from so much as they have a letter just for them. It's also fun for the grandparents to get mail from the grandkids. You could always try that??
ReplyDeleteHey Morgan I just had to laugh to myself regarding your comment about having a Brio pen pal! I also had one and recently regained contact again through the craziest incident. I am currently spending the next year working at a Young Life camp with my husband and during a conversation with one of my coworkers discovered she was best friends with my childhood pen pal!!! Just thought I would share that randomly. :)
ReplyDeleteSam is always interested in the mail too; he too get Highlights and sometimes the Blockbuster is a movie for him.
ReplyDeleteand it totally counts as geography!! is Colorado far enough away? we're in!
It counts for geography, social studies because every part of the country has their own special history, food, landmarks... writing, which can include all of language/English if you want it too. Yes Morgan it totally counts. :)
ReplyDeleteHaving a pen pal is a great idea. I've thought about it with mine a few times but never committed to actually doing it. It is still on my list of maybe we should do that. :)
there is an unschoolers yahoo group for postcard swapping we joined a while ago and have been getting mail from all over the world.
ReplyDeletethe name is unschoolingaroundtheworld on Yahoo! fun!
My son has had a penpal for over five years that he met through a post on MDC. It has been wonderful for him. I love penpals!
